Why should you avoid attempting the newest trend that TikTokers are “sunburning” their acne

Many methods on the internet promise to treat acne, but if you’ve tried any of them, you probably know that very few of them work. TikTokers are well known for offering strange and occasionally utterly ridiculous short cures for our skin issues. Still, the worst beauty skincare trend of 2024—drumroll, please—has to be the sunburning acne fad.

The strange skincare craze, as the name implies, is sunburning your skin till the acne goes away. Some TikTokers are saying that they may reduce their acne and outbreaks by using UV rays instead of topical lotions containing salicylic acid or other acne-fighting chemicals.

Haley Wenthold, 19, a content creator, embraced the movement after sharing a video on TikTok. She posted a video on TikTok with the title, “Telling the sun to burn off my acne,” and it received over 1.7 million views in a short period of time.

Wenthold asserted that “the trend actually works” in the TikTok video. Several more people appeared to concur in the comment area as well.

There are numerous reasons not to try this trend. First and foremost, it’s obvious that you have sensitive skin if you consistently have acne. Sunburns from frequent sun exposure might raise your chance of developing skin cancer. Additionally, it may result in precancerous skin lesions and early aging.

You must always use sunscreen when you are outside in the sun. Despite popular belief, to protect your skin, you need to use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater.

Additionally, prolonged sun exposure can make your skin feel extremely dry. In addition, it may cause your sebaceous glands to overproduce sebum, which is one of the main causes of blemish creation. Therefore, it can be aggravating your acne rather than treating it.
